Pacific
The Pacific provides Costa Rica with the most consistent and exciting sports fishing in Central America . With its abundant Sailfish, Marlin, Tuna, Wahoo, Roosterfish, Mackerel, Mahi Mahi and Snapper being caught regularly, it is no wonder sports fishermen come here to catch that big one. It is the Billfish that has made that area famous, with sailfish and marlin being taken in phenomenal numbers. In the northwest province of Guanacaste , charter boats work out of Playas del Coco, Ocotal, Flamingo, Tamarindo and Carrillo. Further south, you can fish out of Puntarenas, Quepos and Manuel Antonio, Dominical, Drake Bay , Golfito and Zancudo.
Northern Pacific Specifically our area
The Gulf of Papagayo is the major Sport Fishing center in the northern coastal area, boats charter out of Playas del Coco, and Ocotal
Seasons
Marlin: Caught every month of the year; with mid November to early March exceptional, then slowing a bit from April into early June when it picks up again, peaking in August / September.
Sailfish: Caught throughout the year; with May through August normally the top season. They may begin to thin out in September and from August to November.
Tuna: Peak months August to October; but anytime of the year you if you look for them. The Yellow Fin and some Big Eye tuna are often found in and around the Islands , 30 minutes or less running time from the beach.
Dorado: commonly known as dolphin, but… most of us will not call it that because we in vision a friendly beautify dolphin like Flipper not an ugly fish. These colorful gamester are most abundant in late May to October when the seasonal rains flood the rivers, carrying out debris which they like to hide under.
Wahoo: the rains start in May, peaking in July and August. Most are caught around the rocky points and islands, but you will pick one up occasionally fishing offshore.
Roosterfish: available all year, but more are caught in the Papagayo Bay area from November to March. That may be because more boats in the northern most area of this region are fishing in shore during those windy months. The Roosters Fish like the structure of the shoreline and islands where they are found in 50 to 60 feet of water.
